Summer’s Sizzling in Greece

My youthful daydreams of lazing on a Greece beach during summer school breaks and dancing some Zorba style dances at picturesque tavernas into the wee small hours, have met reality.

We are back in Greece – in fact, have been here for just over a week and haven’t yet spent any time on the beach or dancing Zorba style: it is simply too darn hot!  (Somehow those long ago summer fantasies didn’t take into account the weather.)

What we are coming to appreciate is the Greek version of the siesta – that laid back time in the afternoon (hopefully spent in an air-conditioned room) during which time you can read books, gaze at the distant sea, make notes in the journal . . .or if the internet connection works, you can even write a short blog post.

Our time is being spent in the Peloponnese this trip for reasons I’ve written about in previous posts.  This week we are in the furthest most western ‘finger’ of this vast area and will have plenty of new country to show you in future updates.

We’ve spent a good deal of time traveling between towns so I thought today I would give you a sample of our time here.

We’ve had sporadic internet so we may be hit and miss the next week or so both in posting and in visiting our fellow bloggers – I will get back to you all as soon as internet becomes more available or we get back home.  Hope to link up today with Travel Photo Thursday over at Budget Travelers Sandbox!

Thanks for your visit – we hope your summer is sizzling with fun times and good travels ~

  1. Hello Jackie and Joel,

Yes, intense heat can be very debilitating when it comes to sightseeing. But, as you say, it does give the perfect excuse for doing very little and simply relaxing. Enjoy!

    1. Sorry for the delayed response. We've returned from Greece where our computer access was limited to very little time and very little signal strength. Thanks much for sticking with us!

  2. I think I like the Greek version of the Siesta much, much better ;)

How HOT is hot, though? Coming from extremely humid Puerto Rico, I kind of laugh at European or any northerner ideas of hot weather (no offense!) hehe ;)

    1. Yes, we've experienced the South of the Border heat and humidity and agree that it can melt you -- but when it gets to triple digits, no matter where you are, it is hot! thanks for your visit - sorry it took so long to respond!

  3. I'm curious as to the heat too, Jackie! I don't like super hot but we all have different tolerances and perspectives on the weather. So happy for you guys to be having and enjoying! An afternoon siesta sounds great right now :)

    1. 102 and standing on a street corner in there heart of the city with the sun beating down on the concrete is hot no matter where one is. . .but it sure makes a good reason for being lazy as well!! thanks - as always for the visit and comment Mike.

  4. Hi Jackie! I love these random shots. I don't mind the heat when I'm traveling. As long as I can move slowly, I'm happy!

    1. Yes, I am with you Nancie. I guess we had a purpose to this trip and had too many errands to run, places to be and things to do to slow our pace. . .at least in the beginning.

  5. I don't mind the heat while sight seeing as long as I have an air-conditioned room to return to. I always make sure to book a hotel that has it. I like your photos so much, especially the ones with the baskets and the horse. I'm also without internet this week and am currently huddling in a Starbucks to use their free WiFi.

    1. Michele, you can understand my slow response time then. We've returned from Greece and finally have internet contact, full strength and power that doesn't burn up the power chord. . .a techno heaven today! Thanks for your visit!!

  6. Hi Jackie,

Beautiful shots of the gorgeous Peloponnese! Yes, I, too, have come to appreciate siesta for all the activities you mention, and usually spend it online, either creating a new post in the quiet of the afternoon, or taking a short nap in the darkness of shuttered rooms!

Still have my fingers crossed and am anxiously awaiting your news!!

    Happy Sunday!

    1. Sorry I never responded to these wonderful comments. Had little and often no internet signal and when we had it, we shared the lap top so didn't have much time in the blogosphere the last few weeks. Returned to Kirkland yesterday and are enjoying the signal strength. Thanks, as always, for your visit.

  7. I would love to revisit Greece but never in the summer. Love the photos and you leave me wondering if you've got some Greek blood way back in the gene pool. You really do have a love affair with the country.

    1. I doubt if we will ever return to Greece in the summer. The cost is simply too high, too many tourists. . .but it is always good to try it and know what you aren't missing! Thanks for the visit - and yes, we do love Greece.

  8. Hi Jackie, I hope the heat has eased by now and that you finally got to enjoy the beach and do your Zurba dancing:) Those beaches surely look inviting. I enjoyed the road scene shots. Safe travels!

    1. The heat did ease a bit but we never did make it to the beach nor did I do a Zorba dance. . .guess I will have to save those for the next time. . .see, a reason to return! Thanks much for your visit!

We have been having problems in recent weeks with our comment section and I am not quite sure how to fix it. Thanks for letting us know. Some comments have been coming in as emails, so I will respond to those as I get them.
